Crochet Winter Hat Pattern for Red Yellow & Green Hat

This crochet winter hat pattern is a sweet hat and is easy to make, even for a beginner.  It uses a variety of stitches including the front post double crochet (fpdc) and back post double crochet (bpdc) to build on your crochet skills.

The crochet winter hat pattern can be made any size by continuing to work the crown to a larger size.  Check the Crochet Hat Pattern measurement chart for sizing.  

Use any yarn that you prefer. Approximately 75 yards of each color. Use a crochet hook 1mm smaller than the recommended needle for the yarn.

Each row is increased  up to row 6.

  • Slip Stitch (sl st)
  • Single Crochet (sc)
  • Half Double Crochet (hdc)
  • Double Crochet (dc)
  • Front Post Double Crochet (fpdc)
  • Back Post Double Crochet (bpdc)

Crochet Winter Hat Pattern

Start with a Magic Ring or chain 4 and join.

1:  14 sc into Magic Ring loop. Join with sl st into 1st sc

2:  2 dc into each sc around. Join with sl st into 1st dc

3.  chain 3, dc into same space as sl st.  1 dc into next dc.  {2 dc into next dc, 1 dc into next dc} around.  Join with sl st into top of chain 3.

4.  chain 3, dc into same space as sl st.  {1 dc into next 2 dcs,  2 dc into next dc} around.  Join with sl st into top of chain 3.

5.  chain 3, dc into same space as sl st.  {1 dc into next 3 dcs,  2 dc into next dc} around.  Join with sl st into top of chain 3.

6.  .  chain 3, dc into same space as sl st.  {1 dc into next 4 dcs,  2 dc into next dc} around.  Join with sl st into top of chain 3.

7. chain 2, hdc into same space as sl st.  {1 hdc into each dc} around.  Join with sl st into top of chain 2.

8 – 17.  Repeat Row 6

18. Change color.  1 hdc into next stitch} around.  Join with sl st into top of 1st hdc

19.  chain 3 {1 hdc into next stitch} around.  Join with sl st into top of chain 3

20. chain 3, {fpdc around each hdc} around.  Join with sl st into top of chain 3

21.  chain 3 {1 hdc into next stitch} around.  Join with sl st into top of chain 3. 

22.  chain 3, {fpdc around dc made in row 21, hdc into next space} around.  Join with sl st into top of chain 3.

23.  chain 3 {1 hdc into next stitch} around.  Join with sl st into top of chain 3. 

24.  chain 3 {1 dc into next stitch} around.  Join with sl st into top of chain 3. 

25. repeat row 24

26. change color. { Sc into space between hdc of prior row} around.  Join with sl st into first sc.

27.  chain 3 {1 hdc into next stitch} around.  Join with sl st into top of chain 3. 

28.  chain 3 {1 dc into next stitch} around.  Join with sl st into top of chain 3. 

29.  chain 3 {1 fpdc around each of next 2 dc.  1 bpdc around next dc) around. Join with sl st into top of chain 3. 

30.  Repeat row 29

How to Crochet Curly Pom Poms

Leave a tail long enough to sew on the hat.

Crochet 25 chains.

3 dc in each chain to end.

Arrange curls in a twist in one direction.

sc to fasten off. Cut yarn Leaving tail to sew on the hat.
