Toddler Crochet Hat Pattern

Yarn to use:  Use any yarn that you prefer. For example, if you make a hat for a baby, use baby yarn. If for a toddler or an adult, use Worsted, Medium  #4 or a Chunky, Bulky #5.

Needle to use:  Use a needle 1MM smaller than the needle recommended for the yarn. This makes the hat bulkier.  

Skill Level:  Beginner

Stitches Used:

  • Chain (ch)
  • Half Double Crochet (hdc)
  • Front Post Half Double Crochet (fphdc) 
  • Back Post Half Double Crochet (bphdc)

What about the hat measurement?

For an accurate head measure, you need the full head circumference. Use a tape measure around the forehead, keeping it tight. Then divide that number by 3.14 and round up or down to the nearest quarter to get a good crown measurement.  For example, if the head measures 21, here is the math:

21 divided by 3.14 = 6.68 rounded to 7

For the length, measure from the center of the head down to the bottom of the ear.  Consider what your hat brim will look like and make the necessary adjustments.  

Crocheted hats are stretchy and have some give which allows for less importance on precise measurements.

You will make the hat top-down, working in the round. Keep Measuring until you have the proper crown measurement. Then stop increasing.

Remember, you will not be joining at the end of each row, so use a stitch marker to mark the start of each row.  

Begin with a magic loop. 

1.   Ch 2. 9 hdc in ring. Pull ring tight but do not join. Mark place. 

2.   2 hdc into each hdc around. Place stitch marker.

3.   *1 hdc in next st.  2 hdc in next st* repeat around

4.   *1 hdc in next 2 st.  2 hdc in next st* repeat around

5.   *1 hdc in next 3 st.  2 hdc in next st * repeat around

6.   *1 hdc in next 4 st.  2 hdc in next st * repeat around

7.   *1 hdc in next 5 st.  2 hdc in next st * repeat around

8.   *1 hdc in next 6 st.  2 hdc in next st * repeat around

End of increases

To get a bigger hat, continue with increases until you reach the size you like.

10-16  Repeat Row 9 7 times

17.  *1 fphdc around next 7 hdc. 5 bphdc around next 5 hdc* around. 

18.-21. Repeat Row 9 3 more times. 

22.  *1 fphdc around next 2 hdc. 1 bphdc around next stitch* around.

23.- 26. repeat Row 22 4 times.
