This crochet newborn hat pattern is easy and quick. Even a beginner can make one in a few hours.
This hat would look great on either a boy or girl.
It is made from the top-down, increasing until you reach the desired size. Therefore, you can make this pattern fit anyone if you know the head measurement.
For an accurate head measure, you need the full head circumference. Use a tape measure around the forehead, keeping it tight. Then divide that number by 3.14 and round up or down to the nearest quarter to get a good crown measurement. For example, if the head measures 21, here is the math:
21 divided by 3.14 = 6.68 rounded to 7
For the length, measure from the center of the head down to the bottom of the ear. Consider what your hat brim will look like and make the necessary adjustments.
Crocheted hats are stretchy and have some give which allows for less importance on precise measurements.
Here is the Crochet Hat Pattern measurement chart.
Here is a free printable ruler, if you need one.

The orange hat is the first one that I made. I used Lion
Brand Landscapes, which is one of my favorite yarns. But sadly, this is not a
beginner yarn. A beginner could have difficulty ripping out the stitches if
they make a mistake. So instead, a beginner should choose a smoother yarn like
the Bernat at the bottom.
Yarn: 1 skein Lion Brand Landscapes Mustard
Hook: 4mm. The recommended hook for this yarn is 6.5, but a smaller hook gives you a thicker hat.
Stitches used:
